Holiday in Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon

West of Ireland info by region
Galway city | Aran Islands | Connemara | County Roscommon | County Mayo

The west coast of Ireland is timeless, immortalised in song and folklore, long sandy beaches, bleak moorland, beautiful islands, ruined castles, and Neolithic remains. The medieval city of Galway, with its University, is a whirlwind of activity, and the largest town in the county of the same name. It stages various festivals throughout the year including the annual Galway Raceweek, the Arts Festival, and the Air Show. The county is also home to two oyster festivals, at Galway and Clarenbridge, and an ancient horse fair at Ballinasloe. The Aran Islands hosts a spectacular Celtic dance, music, and songfest, meanwhile the Connemara National Park is a place of infinite beauty, and serenity.

The coastline of the county of Mayo possesses much the same tranquility, and is a magically unspoilt environment even though it possesses some of the highest cliffs in Europe. There is a shrine at Knock, and a holy mountain, historical sites at Ballycastle and Foxwood, and bustling towns in Westport and the county capital, Castlebar. If you are more sporty there are no end of choices in Mayo including horse riding and cycling, but ultimately the salmon fishing is one of the biggest draws to this county, with Ballina being its hub. County Roscommon, by contrast, although bounded on three sides by water, is more for the active-minded. There are various museums celebrating all aspects of Irish life, from coal mining to military history, and even a railway museum. There are some lovely country houses to visit, such as Clonalis House and King House, and if architecture is your thing, Boyle Abbey, probably the finest example of a Cistercian church to survive in Ireland. The county has some of the best coarse fishing in the country, with record catches of tench and carp not uncommon. There is a superb choice of self-catering accommodation in the west of Ireland. Whether you are looking for an Irish cottage by the sea on the Mayo coast, a luxury cottage to rent in Galway, a hideaway retreat in Roscommon, a cottage with a log fire in Galway, or a remote self-catering house in Mayo you will find plenty to choose from. The standard of holiday accommodation to rent in this part of Ireland is excellent and the people are very welcoming and friendly. The range is diverse from traditional thatched cottages in Ireland's beautiful countryside to modern luxury apartments in Galway City - whatever kind of self-catering property you choose for your holiday in the west of Ireland you will be able to relax and explore this lovely part of the country.
