County Kerry
County Kerry, the most westerly county, possesses some of the most beautiful lake and mountain scenery in Eire, within the boundaries of Killarney National Park. The Government has built up the 25,000 acres of the park over the years after the initial bequest of the Muckross Estate. The town of Killarney trades on its name and is full of Irish kitsch, so unless this is up your street, it should be avoided. The county town is Tralee, which hosts the Festival of Kerry at the end of August. Renting a holiday cottage in Tralee or a self-catering house near Castlegregory are very popular locations to holidays in the south west of Ireland - as is self-catering houses in all of County Kerry. The Festival of Kerry features the Rose of Tralee celebrations, a week of horse racing, and numerous other events, which means that there is a huge number of places that offer accommodation of all types, from self-catering cottages near Tralee and traditional Irish cottages in Kenmare, to bed and breakfasts and hotels. Tralee is also the gateway to the spectacular Dingle peninsular, probably the most attractive of the five in this remote corner of Ireland. Holiday cottages to let in Dingle are at a premium in the summer - but there are some wonderful places to rent here - idyllic cottages by the Dingle coast and stunning Irish thatched cottages in remote areas. At the tip of the peninsular are the Blasket Islands, an isolated community that led to an unusual flowering of Irish literature in the early 20th century.
