County Cork
The largest county in Ireland is Cork, and as well as having the country’s second city, it is the home to Blarney Castle where every year thousands of people come to climb the battlements, shove their heads through a narrow hole and kiss the famed stone. A word or two of advice: take all the loose change out of your pockets, and don’t wear anything too revealing!

The city of Cork is an important port, and during the period of mass emigration over 2.5 million people left from here making it the single most important place of embarkation. The port, called Cobh, has an important heritage centre, which can help to trace any members of your family that might have left from the port. Cork is a popular place to stay in Ireland and rent a self-catering cottage especially if you want to research your Irish genealogy. As well as this, Cobh was the last stop for the Titanic and also the place that the survivors of the Lusitania were brought. Cork city is just as full of nightlife as Dublin, without quite so much glitz, and during the day there are plenty of places to attract you, such as the Jameson Distillery, the English Market, and the Huguenot Quarter - lots to explore if you have found a self-catering house near Cork to rent. The locals are extremely hospitable in this southwest corner of Ireland, and there are some lovely places to stay, including Georgian townhouses and pretty cottages near Bantry, great homes to rent by the sea and holiday cottages near Castletownroche.

The countryside, which stretches to the southwestern tip of Ireland, is one of the main attractions of the region, and the main town in the west is Bantry, and the fine country estate of Bantry House. This area also witnessed the birth and death of Michael Collins, a fact that is recognised in the village of Woodfield, and just outside Clonakilty. There are numerous islands off the coast, most notably Garinish, with its excellent Italian gardens, and Dursey, which is reached by a rather precarious cable car.
