Klaus Cottage,
Gort, Galway and Mayo

Klaus Cottage is the largest of three self catering cottages situated around a two storey courtyard built during the Great Famine of 1846. All three have been refurbished in recent years and each of the cottages exudes character, is unique in style and furnishings, and act as an excellent base from which to explore the Galway region as well as County Clare. For those who just want to get away from it all Klaus cottage offers peace and tranquility in a historic and relaxing setting.

The estate is on the shores of Lough Cutra, a completely private fishery with many large and smaller pike, as well as some perch and rumours of one or two large trout. Even the most inexperienced angler is bound to catch something!

There is a full time game keeper on the Estate who ensures that all guests are extremely well catered for. Driven Pheasant and Duck shooting as well as Deer Stalking are available during the season at Lough Cutra by arrangement. Many of the woodlands at Lough Cutra were planted in the late 1700s and 1800s specifically with the sport of shooting in mind.

Horse riding is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful 650 acre Estate which surrounds Lough Cutra Castle. The estate has equestrian facilities which include stabling for 10 horses, a sand arena/schooling ground and an excellent cross country course as well as plenty of treks. Guests are welcome to bring their own horses by arrangement. Horses are available to hire locally (see below) and can be delivered to Lough Cutra Estate for your enjoyment.

Lough Cutra Castle and Estate has a long and varied history with both highs and lows, from famine relief to the billeting of soldiers, a period as a convent and life as a private home. It was designed by John Nash who worked on Buckingham Palace, and was visited by guests such as Lady Augusta Gregory and WB Yeats. The countryside surrounding Lough Cutra contains much evidence of a history dating back hundreds of years. In the Summer of 2007 and 2008 the Estate hosted an amazing 3 day music festival in the grounds of Lough Cutra Castle and the Estate hopes to do something similar in 2009.

Off the estate, there are many beautiful areas to explore: WB Yeats lived in Gort for several years until 1929 and his home can now be visited as a museum. For days out, the 7th Century Monastic settlement of Kilmacduagh is a short drive from the house. The lovely remote Aran Islands Islands are located off this coast, rich in Celtic heritage and renowned for their archaeology and geology. The tallest sea cliffs in Western Europe, the Cliffs of Moher, provide a spectacular sight as the Atlantic Ocean beats against the cliffs 214 metres below. You'll also want to see the amazing limestone moonscape of the Burren, an extraordinary plateau fascinating for botanists and walkers alike. Down the road at Ballyvaughan, the Aillwee Caves provide an insight into the netherworld rock formations beneath. Near the Burren, the pretty fishing village of Kinvara has pubs with traditional music and a good selection of restaurants. The mediaeval Bunratty Castle and Folk Park offers banquets and a wide variety of shopping, and is the country's most intact and preserved Castle of the period. The stunning area of Connemara, wildly and dramatically beautiful with lakes, mountains and streams should not be missed. Klaus Cottage is superbly based to explore, relax, enjoy and soak up the atmosphere on this varied, magical and beautiful edge of Ireland.
