Butlerstown House,
Clonatkilty, Cork and Kerry

Butlerstown House is ideally situated to enable guests to explore the fabulous coastline of West Cork. As well as being within 40 minutes of Cork Airport, and less than an hour's drive from the City of Cork, all the well-known names of West Cork are easily less than 60 minutes away, including Glandore, Baltimore, Bantry, Glengarriff, Blarney. To the East, Midleton, Ballymaloe, and Cobh are also easily accessible in an hour via the Jack Lynch tunnel. Last, but not least, the gastronomic centre of Ireland, Kinsale is just 30 minutes along a spectacular coastal drive.

Within 20 minutes of the house there are several good courses to excite even the most well travelled golfer, the Old Head of Kinsale is a remarkable course has featured in many if not all of the golfing guides to Ireland, perched on an old headland, some 200-foot above the sea, with breathtaking views on all sides.

Just 10 minutes away there are some beautiful sandy beaches and small coves and as the house is on the Gulf Stream the water in summer time is warm, yes, really warm.

There is plenty of walking just outside the driveway of the house. Locally, there are some lovely walks from the house to Broad Strand, a super sandy beach just about 1 mile in distance. Blind Strand and Barry's Cove, an old smugglers haunt, are also easily accessible. Other, detailed walks are set out in a selection of good guide books available to guests. These include areas such as Castlefreke Woods, (between Clonakilty and Rosscarberry), Gougane Barra, a fabulous day out in the mountains, sea cliff walking at Galley Head, or, further down the coast at Toe Head.

There is excellent shore and rock fishing just minutes from the house. Bass, Pollock, Mackerel and plenty more besides. Or travel to Courtmacsherry and hire yourself a 16 foot self drive fishing boat for just 70 Euro a day and fish inshore until you drop!

There are two excellent horse riding stables close by. One at Courtmacsherry, with good reliable horses, and the other is at Clonakilty.

These are just a few examples of activities you can sample within just a few miles of Butlerstown House. Further afield, if watersports are your thing, there is are opportunities to go diving in Baltimore, sailing in Kinsale and Baltimore, board sailing at Coolmaine and Sea Kayaking in Banty.

Accommodation:

The house is approached via a driveway through a pair of black wrought iron gates, leading to a large gravelled area with a central round pond motif containing fish and lilies. The house is entered through a magnificent Georgian Portal, paved in County Kerry Marble. The door opens to reveals a splendid hallway and staircase. From the Hall you can access the dedicated Communications Centre with broadband connection and computer and accessories, rentable from 60 Euro per week. The spacious and elegant room drawing room is beautifully furnished in period furniture and has 'French' doors, which lead to a terraced sitting area and a croquet lawn. The fully re-decorated Dining Room has beautiful Georgian windows that look out over the garden. Behind the stairs, there is a corridor into the East Wing, leading firstly to a games room, adjacent to which is the laundry room. This is equipped with American-made washer, electric dryer and a large pot sink. The kitchen is complete with every modern appliance, yet at its heart is an ever-lit Aga range cooker, which is deceptively easy and fun to use, and provides useful background heat for the kitchen. The most appealing feature of this room is the enormous oval oak table which comfortably seats twelve people! Double doors lead to an enclosed sunny courtyard with a seating area and barbeque. Upstairs there are five bedrooms, the largest of which has a magnificent four poster bed. There are stunning views across the front garden to the Northeast aspect and also the Northwest as far as the Drimoleague Mountains in the far distance. All bedrooms are equipped to the highest standard with top quality linen, hairdryers, shaving mirrors, and electric blankets for the cooler evenings. The House stands in around 12 acres of its own grounds, approached by a tree lined avenue. Immediately surrounding the house is a mature well-kept garden, with the south lawn providing a peaceful seating area, where one can read, stroll, play a game of croquet (weather permitting), or simply relax and enjoy the views. As well as the manicured lawns on two sides of the House, there is also an original walled garden of around an acre in size. This garden now houses the purpose-built helipad, available for guests' use if required. Below the House is the woodland which stretches away in a crescent shape for about one third of a mile from the back of the house.

Directions:

From Cork Airport: Exit the Airport Terminal to a traffic roundabout and turn right onto the R600. Travel downhill for 2 kilometers to a junction and service station on your right. Turn right onto R613 signposted Balinahassig, and West Cork N71. Travel a further 4 kilometers through Balinahassig and up to the N71 motorway. Take the first turning left, do not go under the motorway bridge. The signposting here is very misleading, just make sure you turn off left before the bridge and ignore the signposting dead ahead. You will now filter onto the N71 going westbound. Travel to Bandon, approximately 12 kilometers, on entering the 30 miles per hour limit, drive to a traffic island and turn left following the “by- pass” sign, and signs for the N71 and West Cork. Follow the by-pass all the way, down a steep hill and at the bottom “T” Junction turn right. Drive 200 meters to the main N71 and turn left. You are now exiting Bandon and heading west. Drive approximately 1 kilometer to a large brown background sign post on your left hand side, and close to an old MAXOL garage. The sign directs you to “The west Cork Coastal Route, Timoleague etc”. Filter left here and on to a narrow road and look for a finger signpost showing R602 and Timoleague. Turn left here and travel to Timoleague some 8 kilometers or so. Approaching Timoleague there is a river bridge, cross over this and immediately after turn left. Travel in front of the old Abbey ruins and over a hump back junction, do not turn left, travel straight on past a filling station & Supermarket called “DAY TO DAY”, to a signpost marked Barryroe, Butlerstown etc. Travel some 5 kilometers to a crossroads, & turn left here. Travel on to Lislevane and on to Barryroe Supermarket and Creamery. Immediately after turn right to Butlerstown, and 1 kilometer turn right into drive.
